Summary

Math learning with wikis

Throughout the last years, combinations of different techniques have changed the perception and the usage of the WWW. Even for people with lower skills in computer technology, Web 2.0 makes it easy to create and change content in the WWW, especially in Wikipedia. In this paper we want to discuss the potential of Wikis in mathematical education in theory and in practice. In our study, ten project based learning groups of
university students who study to become a math teacher had to use the wiki-sofware Mediawiki for realizing different projects with mathematical content (parabula, probability calculus, symmetry, ...). Mainly, the Wiki should be used by the students as a communication platform for sharing ideas, creating, editing and discussing content. Using the Wiki should help to foster students' reflection on their own learning. After the
students had finished their projects the content was analyzed and questionnaires were filled in by the students. We came to the conclusion that there must be specific conditions in order to use Wikis in university lectures successfully. These conditions (e.g. animate students to discuss and to use the formula editor) as well as the usage of the wiki by the students will be discussed.
